You ever get to know anything new from these books. In this case, I didn't know near his religious family. Neither did I know that he translated the bible into different languages!! I also learnt more about his depression, and the exact date when he decided to slice his ain ear off. Finally, I didn't know anything nearly his caring brother, Theo. His whole life was devoted to van Gogh's well-being, even at the expense of losing his task.

A very recommended and refreshing overview.

A Quick Overview

I loved this volume because it was not pretentious, nor was information technology tedious. Information technology allowed me to proceeds an introductory awareness of Van Gogh without investing more than a few hours of time.

It's a full storyline, not a chopped up fact canvas.

I am grateful for this interesting volume. If it had pictures referenced with it, it would be perfect.

Here's a portrait of a man who tried to live up to his conviction of skilful, fulfilled life with exquisite sensibilities and unalloyed humanity besides great for the realities of the globe he was born into. His life was life imitating art, and art was non imitating but expressing life as he saw. Yet, be it e'er the play of the fate, the more than he tried to be skilful-humored, the more estranged he became because he was an extraordinary creative person constantly breaking away from solitude prejudicial to his ever sensitive and creative spirit. It was no other than the painter Vincent Van Gogh himself in his well-known portrait looking more in thwarting with the world than in madness against it.

As the late eminent Australian biographer of Ben Jonson Ian Donaldson in one case put, adept biography is anything simply a bland, chronological summation of a human being'south life, and I am not intent on reciting the dates of from Gogh's birth to death and in-betweens. Instead, I am all heed in positing what I recollect he was, other than the man with a bandaged cocky-mutilated ear because our sensory perception oft betrays the truthfulness of what nosotros run into when stimulated to the external sensation. Indeed, Gogh was a disturbed human being whose sensitivity constitute no elbow room in the globe with which he so endeavored to have a long-lasting content relationship. It is non to say that Gogh was an archetypal self-imposed exiled artist who voluntarily distanced himself from ordinary life scenes. Hardly so. Equally shown in his alphabetic character to his beloved picayune brother Theo, who helped his misunderstood forlorn creative person brother every bit ever, Gogh tried to be as good-humored and cheerful as he wanted. Still, it was the globe that seemed to betray him with blows that bludgeoned his unalloyed wishes and noble aspirations.

Gogh's paintings reverberate his love of realism and reject bogus romanticism without the platonic romantic ambiance in vogue with the time. He was interested in all that existed equally they were because discovering beauty in the coarseness of reality was his objective in achieving creative and experiential values. In this regard, Gogh was in the aforementioned creative vein as Francoise Millet, whose paintings Gogh admired because Millet believed that treating the commonplace with the feeling of the sublime was what gave art its true ability. The only difference between the masters of art was how to portray information technology with individual flairs of colors, techniques, and perspectives based on their tastes and judgments. Gogh's 'Murphy Eaters" might not have that romantic nobility surrounding the hardscrabble peasants. Withal, they were unforgettably expressive in the nuanced struggles and strife they had to comport and live with.

Perhaps the uneasy cohabitation of the contained spirit and the loving middle distinguished Gogh from his famous peers who had the practical sense to reconcile their creative souls to social needs. Moreover, Gogh lost a sense of direction when he realized that a human being of the fabric wasn't his material. The existential frustrations from the confliction of the volition then added to his already innate fragile sensitivity, a hereditary mental trait running in his maternal family. All the same, Gogh continuously endeavored to fend information technology off and conquer information technology, even when the citizens of Arles, where he dreamed of building a haven for his kindred spirits, united to expel him from the city he once cherished. However, one good-hearted postman continued to give him a impact of kindness till he voluntarily admitted himself into a mental aviary for the peace of his heed and others'.

Upon reading this elegantly narrated life of Vincent Van Gogh, I realized the truth of the genius only took some fourth dimension for its brilliance to smooth, no thing how long it would take. Who would accept thought Vincent Van Gogh, who once sold merely 1 of his works out of hundreds, would be looking at his admirers in the constellation of brilliant painters in heaven? For those who are creators of arts in all genres, famous or hidden, amateur or professional, the story of Vincent Van Gogh will be a consolation to the heart and hope to the spirit that never knows the end.

I was startled to learn that the theologian Henri Nouwen argued that van Gogh was a saint (I read that elsewhere). Knowing that van Gogh had been mixed upwardly with alcoholism and prostitutes, I was really curious as to why a theologian I respected would make such a seemingly outrageous claim. After reading this volume, I think I understand a little amend. The writer did an first-class chore of revealing van Gogh'southward struggles with mental illness while assuasive the beauty of soul that is then obvious in his work to exist clearly seen.

Actually, I practice have *one* criticism: the writer alludes to various paintings but does not include images in the book. That is totally acceptable for famous works that everyone knows, only I found it inconvenient to have to put my Kindle down to look them upwardly.

Excellent concise biography

This is not a detailed, scholarly report, but is a simple recounting of the major events of Van Gogh's life. The five star rating is because the book does an infrequent job of providing a true overview of the artists life in a unproblematic, quick read.

Having read most and watched movies almost Vincent van Gogh, I idea I knew about this difficult artist.  It was a daze to acquire that Vincent was the sixth child, and first son, of an upper-middle-class Protestant government minister and his wife.  At 16, he quit school and went to work equally an apprentice in the company of Parisian art dealers.  Interestingly plenty, his blood brother Theo followed him to the same company but somewhen worked in Brussels, while Vincent worked in London.

After Vincent quit working

Having read about and watched movies near Vincent van Gogh, I thought I knew about this difficult artist.  It was a shock to acquire that Vincent was the 6th kid, and first son, of an upper-eye-class Protestant minister and his married woman.  At sixteen, he quit school and went to work as an amateur in the company of Parisian art dealers.  Interestingly enough, his brother Theo followed him to the aforementioned visitor simply eventually worked in Brussels, while Vincent worked in London.

After Vincent quit working with the art dealers, he had a religious conversion.  When he repeatedly failed at getting a ministerial position, his father suggested putting him in a lunatic asylum.  That caused a break betwixt father and son.  In 1880, Vincent, who was a self-taught artist, moved to Brussels to written report under Willem Roelofs.

The story, as told in this book, shows that Vincent had severe mental wellness issues.  One particularly telling comment:  "For van Gogh, painting was non an practice in exploring the magic and mystery of the world but a consolation from the sadness of his life."

Throughout this story, I am in awe of Theo, the younger brother who and so lovingly took care of Vincent.  Theo must take been devastated when Vincent died, past his own hand, at 37.  This is a tragic story, told compassionately.
